“A call from Fabien Baron at Interview Magazine sent me to Berlin in November 1989 to photograph a band I hadn’t even heard of, yet — the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Berlin was still divided. The air was heavy, tense. The Wall stood like a scar through the city. It felt desolate , almost postwar.
We were shooting in the studio when I noticed a shift. The crew started whispering, then talking louder. Something was happening.
It was the day the Wall came down.
I thought, let’s go.
We took the band to the Wall. And there we were, not just photographing history… but part of it. Breaking pieces of it apart. That was the fun part.
The next day, feeling perhaps a little too clever, I decided to cross into East Berlin to capture the stark reality on the other side.
That’s when it turned.
Five army trucks surrounded us. Soldiers jumped out. Kalashnikovs — straight in my face. And me, being me, I told them to f*#k off.
Not my finest moment.
God bless the taxi driver who grabbed me, shoved me into his cab, and sped back toward West Berlin. As we escaped, he said:
“They wanted to take you for a little walk in the park.”
Meaning… the woods!”
